Sunday I headed back down to the South Embarcadero to watch the return of the Red Bull Air Races to San Diego. This time it was completely sold out. I was able to get tickets for me and a friend last Monday. The North Embarcadero viewing area was already sold out. Needless to say, the crowds were larger than the last time the air races were here.
Again we were treated to a variety of opening flybys from the military. We had an F-18 do a slow pass at an extreme angle of attack and full throttle. Very loud. The Coast Guard did another rescue demonstration, and so did the Navy. Chuck Aaron also did his helicopter aerobatic routine, which was incredible.
Ever see a helicopter do loops and rolls?
Once the air racing started the real aerial demonstrations began. After the fastest eight pilots were determined there were three Americans in the top five. It ended up being another great shoot out between last year’s champion Mike Mangold and San Diego winner Paul Bonhomme. Again the winner of Red Bull Air Race San Diego was Paul Bonhomme. American Kirby Chambliss came in third.
Hopefully, San Diego will continue to be a stop on the tour. Check it out if you get the chance! There are more videos of the action on the Red Bull Air Race web site.
